The Basque Cheese Factory announces a $20 million modernization and expansion project

A major investment to strengthen the regional dairy sector, to support growth and ensure the sustainability of the company

Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, September 16, 2026 – La Basque Cheese Factory, an iconic family business in the Lower St. Lawrence region, is today reaching a significant milestone in its history by announcing a project to modernize and expand its facilities rated at 20 millionThis structuring project will notably increase the company's production capacity, process more milk from local producers, and modernize its facilities to better meet the needs of its employees and partners. 

The work should begin in spring 2027 and lead to the commissioning of the new facilities no later than in 2028During the project, Fromagerie des Basques will continue its operations with its existing teams.

Modernize to better meet needs
Present in the Lower St. Lawrence region for over 30 years, Fromagerie des Basques has become a leading company in the area, renowned for the quality of its products, its artisanal expertise, and its close ties with local dairy farmers and partners. Faced with increasing demand and growing infrastructure needs, the company plans to modernize its facilities, a necessary step to increase its production capacity, continue its development, and expand its distribution network under optimal conditions. 

The expansion and modernization project includes, in particular: 

  • The expansion of the existing factory, which will increase its area to 2215 square meters;
  • The addition of new equipment and the modernization of infrastructure to optimize operations and automate certain production steps; 
  • The development of complete facilities dedicated to the reception of milk and the activities of transporters; 
  • Modernizing workspaces to better meet employee needs and improve operational efficiency; 
  • The interior layout of the facilities according to the requirements of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), allowing optimal circulation of products, materials and personnel;
  • The creation of new drying rooms and storage spaces to support the growth of fine cheese production.
